FAVOURITE PLAYERS; Rinat Dasaev (USSR), Bodo Illgner (Germany), Edwin van der Sar (the Netherlands)

IT MUST BE SAID, YOU HAD A VERY GOOD SEASON  PERSONALLY, BUT HOW DO YOU BELIEVE IT WENT? My opinion is that I can’t say that was a “good season” for me because I didn’t prepare well mentally or physically. Actually I had tried my best in all ways to re-sharpen my condition as quick as I can. Therefore, no matter what the outcome of the season, I have no regret at all.

WHAT DO BELIEVE ARE YOUR GOALKEEPING STRENGTHS? Communication and the ability to command my area. I believe it is very important for any goalkeeper, as it can reduce the chance of a shot from opponents to as few as possible.

AND HOW ABOUT LAM PAKS SEASON, WILL IT BE DEEMED A SUCCESS, OR A FAILURE? Honestly, this season cannot be rated as “successful” as we couldn’t defend the league championship that we won the previous season, which was our pre season objective. On the other hand, we are pleased for the good performance of some promising players like Ronald Leong and Lei Ka Kei in this season, as they are a precious asset for the club in future.

HOW DISAPPOINTING WAS IT TO COME WITHIN A SINGLE MINUTE OF LIFTING THE MACAU FA CUP, ONLY TO LOSE ON PENALTIES? Of course it was a terribly frustration for Lam Pak as we believed that we can get the trophy in that moment. However, it is the attraction football. We never know what will happen as long as the game has not ended. Despite being upset by the result, in the optimistic way we learnt something from it – To improve the concentration and communication among teammates until the final whistle in future.

DESPITE THAT, TELL US ABOUT ABOUT YOUR OWN PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT (THE GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR AWARD). Actually I don’t think my performance was outstanding in this season because I did not keep training over the previous 18 months. That’s why I was a bit clumsy and lacked stamina in the first few matches. But my performance improved gradually through my continuous training both in the gym and on the field every week. In my opinion, the stable performance is the main reason of winning the award because I did not make any big mistake in the season, which is the most significant for a goalkeeper.

LAST SEASON, YOU HAD MENTIONED YOUR INTENT TO RETIRE, SAYING YOU WANTED TO CONCENTRATE ON YOUR GOALKEEPER COACHING. WHAT CHANGED YOUR MIND? Despite Domingos Chan deciding to leave Lam Pak for Sun Hei (Hong Kong team) last season, I still had no intention to play again. Our manager, Jeffrey Chan had intended to give a bigger opportunity to our young goalkeeper, Joe Tai. I also want to do more of a coaching job for the club as I feel I could contribute in that way also. In addition, it is time to step down after considered my age is almost 40. Unfortunately, after defeat against FC Porto, Jeffrey felt it necessary for me to play again, as there was no substitute goalkeeper in our upcoming matches (Billy Cheong was suspended for 5 matches due to misconduct with referees) I had to put the jersey on again in the rest of the matches. The support of my teammates and my wife was crucial for me.

HOW IS YOUR COACHING GOING? Currently I am still working for the Macau national team as a goalkeeper coach and instructor. I am planning to complete AFC ‘A’ license coaching course next year. I had acquired my AFC advance GK coaching license at few years ago, so I wish to become an AFC goalkeeper instructor in the near future. This has been my ambition, to give back my football knowledge to Macau.

It really does. Coaching gives you a different perspective on goalkeeping. If you know more about goalkeeping, you will know how to defend your goal smarter and more logically. The knowledge helps me realize both advantages and weaknesses. I can plan a specific training to fit my own physical condition.

KEEPING WITH THE COACHING THEME, WHAT IS YOUR ASSESSMENT ON THE STANDARD OF THE YOUNG GOALKEEPERS COMING THROUGH IN MACAU? In Macau, the most common weaknesses of young goalkeepers are basic technique, such as ball handling and dealing with the back pass. Perhaps the problem is they start playing as goalkeepers later than normal. An outdated training style is one of the factors, as there is no specific coaching in Macau for goalkeepers. In addition, their old style tactic concept struggles to catch up the pace of modern football.

Rinat Dasaev of the USSR and Germanys Bodo Illgner was my favorite goalkeepers in my childhood.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BE A GOALKEEPER? I feel the goalkeeping position was more challenge for me. A good goalkeeper must always be concentrated, alert and commanding with invincible fighting spirit. Those essential attributes have not only improved my performance in the field, but also my attitude in my life. Moreover, the unique duty and jersey makes goalies always keep focus in the field…I love that feeling.

IF YOU COULD HANDPICK YOUR DEFENSIVE BACK FOUR, CONSISTING OF ONLY PLAYERS FROM MACAU LEAGUES, WHO WOULD YOU SELECT TO HELP DEFEND YOUR GOAL, AND WHY? Left back: Lam Ka Pou, Jophy (Lam Pak) – Strong will with unrivaled stamina. Cenral defence: Wamba (Windsor Arch Ka I) – Astonishing physically with strong ariel dominence. Central defender: Lam Ka Koi, Alan (Lam Pak) – Natural born leader. Right back: Lee Ka Him (Macau U23 Development) – Promising defender, disciplined and speedy.

AND WHICH PLAYER DO YOU CONCIDER TO BE THE BIGGEST THREAT TO YOUR GOAL WHEN YOU PLAY THEM? Nowadays it is difficult for me to choose a striker in Macau, but Geofredo Cheung is the one I have to keep alert with for 90+ minutes.

WHAT STEPS DO YOU FEEL SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROGRESS MACANESE FOOTBALL? 1) More training hardware needs to be made available. 2) More investment in youth training. 3) Less quarrelling, more co-operation amongst the footballing community in Macau.

FINALLY, AFTER THE SEASON YOU HAVE JUST HAD, SURELY YOU WILL BE PUSHING ANY THOUGHTS OF RETIREMENT ASIDE FOR ANOTHER SEASON, SO WHAT IS NEXT FOR WILLIAM CHU?My target next season is to fight ahead for the 10th championship title with Lam Pak before my retirement.

  1. Hey would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re using? I’m
going to start my own blog soon but I’m having a hard time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking
for something completely unique. P.S My
apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!
